Tennis Scoring Explained

Tennis scoring can look confusing at first: 15, 30, 40, deuce, advantage, games and sets. But once you understand the basic logic, it becomes simple and easy to follow.

1. Tennis points: 0, 15, 30, 40

In tennis, points are not counted as 1, 2, 3 and 4. Instead, the score goes like this: 0 is called love, then 15, then 30, then 40, and after that the player can win the game.

For example, if a player wins the first point, the score becomes 15-0. If the same player wins the next point, it becomes 30-0. If both players win two points each, the score is 30-30.

2. What does love mean in tennis?

In tennis, love means zero. So if the score is 15-love, it means one player has 15 points and the other player has 0 points.

You may hear this word often when watching professional tennis matches. It is simply part of the traditional tennis scoring language.

3. How to win a game

To win a game, a player usually needs to win at least four points and have a two-point advantage. If the score is 40-30 and the leading player wins the next point, that player wins the game.

But if both players reach 40, the score becomes deuce. From deuce, the game continues until one player wins two points in a row.

4. What is deuce?

Deuce happens when both players have 40 points. At this moment, one point is not enough to win the game. A player must win two points in a row.

This is one of the most exciting parts of tennis scoring because the game can continue for a long time if players keep winning points alternately.

5. What is advantage?

After deuce, the player who wins the next point gets advantage. If that player wins the next point again, they win the game.

If the player with advantage loses the next point, the score goes back to deuce. This can happen many times in one game.

6. Games and sets

A tennis match is made of sets, and each set is made of games. To win a set, a player usually needs to win six games and lead by at least two games.

For example, a set can end 6-4 or 6-3. But if the score is 6-5, the set usually continues because the leading player does not yet have a two-game advantage.

7. What is a tie-break?

A tie-break is usually played when the set score reaches 6-6. In a tie-break, points are counted normally: 1, 2, 3 and so on.

To win a tie-break, a player usually needs to reach 7 points and lead by at least two points. For example, 7-5 or 8-6.

8. How many sets are in a match?

Most tennis matches are played as best of three sets. This means the player who wins two sets wins the match.

Some professional men’s matches in major tournaments can be best of five sets, where a player needs to win three sets.

9. Example of tennis scoring

Imagine Player A wins the first point: the score is 15-0. Player B wins the next point: 15-15. Player A wins again: 30-15. Then Player A wins two more points and wins the game.

At first it may feel unusual, but after watching or playing a few games, the scoring system becomes much easier to understand.

10. Why beginners should learn scoring early

Understanding tennis scoring helps beginners enjoy the game more. You can follow matches, play with friends and understand what is happening during training.

If you train with a coach, knowing the scoring system also helps you practice real match situations and prepare for friendly games or tournaments.
